Maximising Space in Small Retail Fit-Outs
Do you own a retail space with little room to work with? Don’t lose hope – even with the smallest stores, there are ways to maximise space.
The layout of your shop is crucial, and there are lots of ways in which you can create the illusion of a bigger space. Here at Daniel James interiors, we are a team of interior design experts and with our collective experience, we have learnt a few ways in which you can turn your space into an optical illusion.
Key Tips for Maximising Retail Space
We have compiled a list of important tips for maximising the space in your retail store:
Be Cutthroat with Clutter
- We highly recommend you keep your store free of clutter. Evaluate every item in the store – what purpose does it hold? Is it necessary, and is it useful? When you’re limited in floor space, you need to take decisive action on what stays, and what goes.
- If you have bulky items, keep them away from aisle space to prevent obstruction, and ensure that display tables don’t appear overcrowded. We recommend the use of built-in shelves to display products. You could also incorporate risers, blocks and plinths.
Vertical Spaces are your Friend
- If you are lacking in floor space, why not utilise wall space instead? Using vertical space is a fantastic way of saving room, but it is also a great way of showcasing your products. We recommend a gridwall mesh display or wall-mounted rail. These additions draw the eye up and create a more visually appealing space with the added spaciousness.
- If you are concerned about customers being unable to reach the products, we suggest the use of reach poles so you can unhook stock or products for customers – you can also use a stool for slightly lower products.
Lighting is Key
- A well-lit space typically feels more open and inviting, so your lighting design is something that should be considered carefully. Don’t place your stock in dark, dingy areas. We recommend the use of wall sconces, flush lighting and track lights to create an open and airy feel to the space.
- Consider areas of the store that you wish to highlight. We recommend placing the brightest lighting over display tables – this is a great way of drawing in the attention of customers.
Add Mirrors
- Mirrors are used to create the illusion of a bigger space, so they are a fantastic addition to a small store. Mirrors also reflect light, which can really help to make your space feel brighter if placed strategically. If you can, we suggest a large floor mirror for maximum impact – but if this isn’t possible, try to incorporate a mirror into a free section of wall and utilise your vertical space.
